Review your tax return

Before you file your New York State income tax return, be sure to review your tax account balance in your Individual Online Services account to ensure you are reporting the correct amount on your return.

What is my tax account balance?

Your tax account balance is the total amount you paid throughout the year your income. Your credit includes:

  • All estimated taxes software, from your online services account, or with Form IT-2105, Estimated personal tax returns.
  • Any overpayment from last year’s return that you asked us to apply for the following year.
  • If you ask for an extension, any payment made using software, from your online service account or use Form IT-370, Apply for Automatic Semester Extended individual submission deadlines.
Noted: if your employer withheld taxes from your paycheck, that amount is shown on your pay stub and the W-2 you receive at the end of the year. The amount is not included in your tax account balance as shown on your account summary homepage.

Where can I view my balance?

To review your tax account balance, use your Individual Online Service account with the Tax Department. Your account also gives you access to your tax-related information and activity.

Married filling a joint return? You will both need your own Online Services account to review each spouse’s separate tax account balance. When you file your joint return, report the total payments from both spouse’s accounts.

Do I need to file an income tax return?

Generally, you must file a New York State income tax return if you’re a New York State resident and required to file a federal return. You may also have to file a New York State return if you’re a nonresident of New York and you have income from New York sources.

You need to determine if you’re a resident, nonresident, or party year resident before you can decide if you need to file a return with New York State.

Filling information for New York State residents

If you are a New York State resident you must file Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return, if you meet any of the following conditions;
  • You have to file a federal return.
  • You did not have to file a federal return but your recomputed federal adjusted gross income plus New York additions was more than $4,000 ($3,100 if you are single and can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s federal return).
  • You want to claim a refund of any New York State, New York City, or Yonkers income taxes withheld from your pay.
  • You want to claim any of the refundable or carryover credits available.
Do not file Form IT-201 if you were a New York State resident for only part of the year. If you moved into New York State on any day other than January 1, or moved out of New York State on any day other than December 31, see Filling information for New York State part year residents.

Filling information for New York State nonresidents

If you are a New York nonresident to you must file Form IT-203. Nonresident and Part Year Resident Income Tax Return, if you meet any of the following conditions.

  • You are a nonresident with New York source income and your New York adjusted gross income federal amount column (Form IT-203, line 31) exceeds your New York standard deduction.
  • You want to claim a refund of any New York State, New York City, or Yonkers income taxes withheld from your pay.
  • You had a net operating loss for New York State personal income tax purposes for the tax year, without having a similar net operating loss for federal income tax purposes.

Filling information for New York State part year residents 

If you are a New York State part-year residents you must file Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return. If you meet any of the following conditions:

  • You are a part-year resident with any income during your resident period or you had New York source income during your nonresident period and your New York adjusted gross income Federal amount column (Form IT-203, line 31) exceeds your New York standard deduction.
  • You want to claim a refund of any New York State, New York City, or Yonkers income taxes withheld from your tax.
  • You want to claim any of the refundable or carryover credits available.
  • You are a part-year resident and you are subject to a separate tax on any lump sum distributions for your resident period derived from or connected with New York sources.
  • You had a net operating loss for New York State personal income tax purposes for the tax payer , without having a similar net operating loss for federal income tax purposes.
You may have additional filling responsibilities if you are a New York City or Yonkers part-year resident. have Yonkers income, or are subject to the MCTMT.
